If you want to use your Arduino board with LabVIEW software, you need to download two additional packages for LabVIEW, the VI Package Manager (VIPM), which allows us to manage additional packages in the software, and the Arduino toolkit.

If you already use other additional software packages in LabVIEW, you will most likely already have VIPM installed, and in newer versions of LabVIEW, VIPM is already included with the general installation. You can download both packages from the official NI website.

The NI installation page gives us two options, download the toolkit with VIPM or via FTP. In this case, we will use VIPM, when we click on this button, JKI VIMP will open on our computer and the software will ask if we want to continue with the installation.

First of all, it is necessary to load the LabVIEW LIFA_Base firmware to the Arduino board, for this, we run the Arduino IDE and open the LabVIEWInterface.ino file, which is located in the path: C:\Program Files (x86)\National Instruments\LabVIEW 2018\vi.lib\LabVIEW Interface for Arduino\Firmware\LIFA_Base

«LabVIEW is a comprehensive development environment that provides scientists and engineers with unprecedented hardware integration and broad compatibility. LabVIEW inspires you to solve problems, accelerates your productivity, and gives you the confidence to continually innovate to create and deploy measurement and control systems.»

As they tell us on the National Instruments website, LabVIEW is a development environment geared toward scientists and engineers, which aims to help us program graphically in a simple way. In addition, it has built-in, engineering-specific libraries of software functions and hardware interfaces and features for analysis, visualization and data sharing.

We will use the tools provided to control our Arduino from our PC monitor with a graphical interface that we will create. From now on, we will make the user interfaces for our projects ourselves, and not only the Arduino ones. We will be innovating continuously!

In this opportunity we are going to learn how to manipulate our Arduino board from National Instruments LabVIEW, from the installation of the tools we need to the programming and compilation of our programs, for which we will see a couple of basic examples.

For this tutorial, it will be assumed that we already have our Arduino board, the Arduino IDE installed and the LabVIEW software from National Instruments. Perhaps, if you have already worked with serial communication either with any microcontroller and LabVIEW you may have already installed the NI Visa plug-in, however if this is not the case we will explain below the necessary steps to install it.

To be able to work and enable the ports and communication interfaces from LabVIEW we have to install the NI Visa add-in as mentioned and fortunately National Instruments offers it for free from its official website. To proceed to install it we will download it from here.
