Raspberry pi 4 no wireless lan interfaces found

When I perform iwconfig, it lists lo and eth0 but not wlan0. I tried flashing the SD card with retropie 3.8.1 and version 4.0 candidate and both exhibited the same behavior. I then tried NOOB (raspberian) and this also does the same thing. Where the network icon is in the upper right corner it says «No wireless interfaces found».

I found 2 other threads on raspberrypi.org describing the same behavior. Both have suggestions that I have tried, but neither have answers or could not solve my problem. I have posted in both in hopes of resurrecting those threads.

For retropie, the card format was the same (SD Formatter, guiformat), but then I use win32diskimager to place the images on the SD card. These are two new images from the retropie download section. Versions 3.8.1 and 4.0 rc1. I used exactly the same 3.8.1 image to flash the first time I did it later. However, I tried to download another copy, which did not work, same behavior.

We were not expecting it for a few months, but the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B arrived by surprise at the end of June. It did so with a radical improvement in its specifications, something that many users had been expecting for a long time.

We have had the opportunity to analyze it, and during those tests and the realization of this article we have confirmed something surprising: you do not need a PC to work if your needs are basic, because the Raspberry Pi 4 can become (among other things) an amazing desktop PC… if you are able to get used to Linux, of course.

Things do not change too much in the Raspberry Pi 4 (Model B), a version that retains many of the principles of its predecessors: the position and arrangement of almost all connectors and chips is the same, and at one end we have the network connector and the four USB ports, although in this case they are «inverted» with respect to the RPi 3 Model B/+.

Next to them is the other major modification of the RPi 4 with respect to its predecessor: power is no longer provided by the Micro USB port, but via a USB-C port that is capable of supplying 5V and 3A for a total power of 15W.

Ubuntu is a powerful free open source operating system that is good for beginners who want to explore Linux and experienced professionals who want a solid and secure system for projects and the like. However, despite all its virtues, it can sometimes have problems connecting to Wi-Fi networks.

A Wi-Fi connection problem can be a hardware problem or a software problem. Here are some practical solutions if users have problems connecting to Wi-Fi networks.

Note : the biggest problem users will face is having a wireless card made by Broadcom. Although the manufacturer is part of the Linux Foundation, this does not mean that their driver support is good all the time. Aside from the drivers, another problem is the TKIP encryption being used.

If the response from these commands comes back with output similar to the screenshot below, then you’re in luck: Ubuntu can find the card. It is usually identified with «Network Controller» or «Ethernet Controller».

We can also connect our RaspberryPi through a Wi-Fi connection, however, for this we will need to acquire a USB adapter for wireless networks. There are many compatible adapters but we have to take into account some aspects.

Another aspect to take into account is that Wi-Fi adapters consume enough power if when we turn on our device and connect the USB adapter the RaspberryPi reboots or becomes unstable, first we must verify that the power transformer provides enough power, otherwise we can change the power transformer or connect a USB hub with its own power supply to the RaspberryPi and connect our wireless network USB adapter to this hub.

Installing a Wi-Fi adapter with Raspbian is very simple, we will turn on the RaspberryPi and access the desktop mode, if we are in console mode we will enter the startx command and press the enter key on the keyboard to access the Raspbian desktop.
